21 People Living in Hong Kong's Tiny 'Coffin Homes'

Hong Kong has a population of 7.35 million, and although it is generally considered a wealthy region, high-priced houses mean plenty of people without the money to buy them.

Hong Kong's "Coffin Homes" are an answer to this, with an estimated 200,000 living in tiny subdivided units for rents cheaper than an average accommodation; but still not for nothing. Many residents are paying the equivalent of almost $600 a month for a space they don't even fit into completely, an amount that makes it virtually impossible to save anything off of a lower-class income.

Shared in an Atlantic article, Associated Press photographer Kin Cheung spent some time around the Coffin house community, photographing the insides of units, and people going about their daily home life.

Fighting cockroaches, bedbugs, and other unsanitary conditions, these coffin houses are a gut-wrenching solution to Hong Kong's housing shortage.
